The Digestive System

QuestionAnswer
What is digestion Digestion is the breakdown of food
Physical digestion Breaking down food into smaller pieces E.G Using our teeth to cut and chew food
Chemical digestion Breakdown of food using enzymes or acid E.G the (hydrochloric) acid in our stomach helps soften food
Stage 1 Ingestion.: The food is in the mouth
Stage 2 Digestion: The food is broken down into simpler, absorbable molecules
Stage 3 Absorption: The absorbabale molecules are passed into the blood and carried to all of te cells
Stage 4 Assimilation: The food is used by the body for energy and to build new cells
Stage 5 Egestion: Undigested food material is released from the digestive system as faeces
Enzymes A chemical found in living organisms, that speeds up chemical reactions
What chemical carries out the chemical reaction that involves food being broken down ? Enzymes
The mouh Digestion begins here, where amylase in the salvabreaks starch down into glucose
The esophagus Carries food down to the stomach
The stomach Churns and mixes food (Physical digestion) Hydrochloric acid softens and breaks down food and also kills any bacteria (chemical digestion)
The small intestine Food is further broken down here by enzymes Nutrients from food are absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream
The large intestine Also called the bowel or colon, any water in the food is reabsorbed into the bloodstream here The remianing solid waste (faeces) is then pushed through the large intestine to the rectum
The rectum and Anus Rectum stores faeces Faeces pass through the anus ans out of the body
Salivary glands Make salive
Liver Produces liquid bile for the breakdown of fat Contains an enzyme called amylase
Gallbladder Stores liquid bile
Pancreas Makes enzymes to breakdown food
Pharynx Voicebox
