States of Matter

QuestionAnswer
Matter Anything that has a mass and takes up space
3 states of matter Solids, Liquids and gases
Absorbent Waterproof
Elastic Rigid
Flexible Rigid
Transparent Opaque
Strong Weak
Solids Definite shape Definite volume Hard to compress Does not flow
Liquids No definite shape Definite volume Hard to compress Flows easily
Gases No definite shape No definite volume Easy to compress Diffuses to fill all available space
Particle theory Everything is made up of tiny particles
Particles - Solids Fixed in position
Particles - Liquids Can slide over each other
Particles - Gases Further apart and move more freely
Heat When you add heat you are adding energy
What happens when ice mets ? The heat causes the particles that make up the ice to vibrate faster and change state
Melting point The temperature of the substance melts at something
Evaporation In a liquid some particles have more energy than others and those that havethe most, leave the surface, spread out and form a gas
Boiling All particles have eneough energy to leave the surface and spread out to form a gas
Boiling point The temperature at which a liquid changes its state to a gas
Boiling point for water 100 degrees celsius
Is evaporation or boiling slower ? Evaporation is slower
Condensation When a gas changes state from a gas to a liquid
Diffusion The spreading out of materials due to the movement of the particles
Physical change Matter changes state or shape
Chemical change New substance is formed

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
