TermDefinition
Pulley A simple machine that uses a rope/cable and grooved wheel to lift objects
Work a force that moves an object; no work is done if an object doesn’t move Force X Distance = Work
Newtons Force is measured in units called Newtons (not the cookie)
Power work is done in a certain time- Work divided by time = power; measured in Watts Work divided by Time = Power
Wheel & Axle A simple machine that consists of a circular object
Lever A simple machine that has a stiff bar and rotates on a fixed point (fulcrum)
Inclined Plane A simple machine that consists of a flat surface with one end higher than the other end
Screw A simple machine that consists of an inclined plane and a wedge
Machine a tool or device that makes work easier by changing the direction or the amount of force needed to move an object; DOES NOT MAKE LESS WORK
Simple Machine a machine that consists of a few parts
Complex Machine a machine made of more than one simple machine.
Newton’s Three Laws of Motion describe how forces act on objects
Joules Work in measured in units called Joules
Equilibrium When all the forces act on an object that are balanced and the object doesn’t move; no net force.
Net Force When a force acts on an object and causes it to move (may be in the same direction or in opposite directions).
Deceleration to slow down the speed.
