Sci 6 Final Vocab

Science 6 Final Exam Review

TermDefinition
Analyze Look over/study something carefully
Warm Front Weather at this front includes steady showers followed by warm, wet and humid air; red half circle line pointing to the direction it is moving
Cold Front Weather at this front includes brief heavy thunderstorms, possibly strong winds (tornadoes/ blizzards) followed by cooler and drier air; blue triangle line pointing to the direction it is moving
Stationary Front When a cold front and warm front meet with no movement for severals days; red and blue line
Occluded Front When a warm air mass is trapped in between 2 cold air masses; purple triangle and half circle line
Water Cycle The movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere where liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, then precipitates back to Earth through rain and snow Water that falls from the sky in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail
Precipitation Water that falls from the sky in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail
Infiltration The process where water soaks into the ground from the surface, like rainwater soaking into soil. It helps plants get water and refills underground water sources.
Evaporation When water changes from a liquid to a gas and rises into the air.
Condensation When water vapor in the air cools down and changes back into tiny drops of liquid water.
Inferred To figure out or guess something based on clues or information you already have.
Basin A low area of land where water collects, like a bowl that holds rain or rivers.
Arid A place that is very dry and gets little rain,
Mitigate To make something less severe or harmful.
Seismic Relating to earthquakes or other vibrations of the earth and its crust.
Magnitude The size or strength of an earthquake.
Frequency How often something happens, like earthquakes.
Geologic The structure of the Earth and how it has changed over time.
Reduction Making something smaller or less.
Density Amount of mass per volume; how tightly (or loosely) packed particles are; more dense sinks, less dense floats/ rises
Fluctuates To change up and down over time.
Rock Cycle The geologic process where rocks change over time by heating, cooling, breaking, and moving.
Sediments Small pieces of rock, sand and dirt.
Compaction The process where sediments are pressed tightly together under pressure, helping to form sedimentary rock.
Igneous Rocks formed from the cooling and solidification of magma (molten rock) or lava (magma that reaches the Earth's surface).
Solidification The process through which molten rock (magma or lava) cools and transforms into solid rock.
Metamorphic Rocks formed by changes due to intense heat, pressure, or both.
Sedimentary Rock formed through the compaction and solidification of sediments, which are particles pressed tightly together over time.
Erosion The process that breaks down rocks and sediments, transporting them through wind, water, or ice.
Deformation The process in the rock cycle where rocks change shape or structure due to pressure and stress.
Weather The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.
Air Masses A large body of air with roughly the same temperature and humidity characteristics over a wide area.
cP Continental Polar (cP) air masses are characterized as cold and dry, originating over land masses in high-latitude regions.
cT A continental tropical (cT) air mass is a type of air mass that forms over warm, dry land, typically in tropical regions, and is characterized by being hot and dry.
mP A Maritime Polar (mP) air mass is characterized as cool and moist, originating over high-latitude ocean regions.
mT A maritime tropical (mT) air mass is a warm, moist air mass that forms over tropical or subtropical bodies of water.
