Rock Cycle

| rock cycle | the series of processes that change one type of rock into another type of rock |
| intrusive igneous rock | igneous rock that forms when magma rises up and cools in a place underground |
| extrusive igneous rock | rock that forms from the cooling and solidification of lava at Earth's surface |
| magma | Molten rock beneath the earth's surface |
| lava | molten rock that reaches Earth's surface |
| sedimentary rock | a rock that forms from compression and cemented layers of sediment |
| compaction | the process that presses sediments together |
| cementation | The process by which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together into one mass. |
| metamorphic rock | A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. |
| foliated | Term used to describe metamorphic rocks whose grains are arranged in parallel layers or bands. |
