Circulatory System--

blahalhal

QuestionAnswer
What is the function of the Circulatory System? -deliver oxygen and nutrients to all cells in body -remove waste products of cellular processes including CO2 -pathway for body fighting bacteria, hormones, chemical messengers -controls body temperature in warm blooded animals
What does simple transport rely on? Diffusion, no special transport system ex. single celled: amoeba diffuse across membrane and cytoplasm ex. multi celled: jelly fish and hydra diffuse fluid with each cell
What are the two types of specialized transport? open and closed transport
What is open transport? organism's organs are bathed in blood. Have one blood vessel called aorta.
What is closed transport? organism pumps blood through a network of blood vessels in the body. Blood moves in only ONE direction.
What are larger vessels for? collect blood to pump
What are small vessels for? distributing blood. tiny capillaries have a lot of surface area to exchange with cells
What is blood made up of and in % 55% plasma, 44% red blood cells, 1% white blood cells
What does hemoglobin do in red blood cell? carries the oxygen
The efficiency of closed transport depends on what 3 factors? -composition of the blood -path of circulation -speed of the blood flow (blood pressure)
In a worm, what are the two main blood vessels? -dorsal blood vessel (top) -ventral blood vessel (bottom)
Does a worm have a true heart? Explain no true heart, but it has 5 pairs of pumps called aortic arches that pump blood.
Why does a worm have less pigment in its blood? to have a higher carrying capacity for oxygen
How do invertebrates use the circulatory system? muscular heart muscles pump blood past specialized respiratory surface before traveling to the rest of the body
What is the heart of a fish and what is the limitation? -2 chambered heart -single circulation because deoxygenated blood is only pumped once through the body -limitation: slow blood flow (cold blood okay)
Describe the heart of amphibians and limitation. -3 chambered -incomplete double circulation (mixing of deoxygenated and oxygenated blood) limitation: efficiency of blood is reduced by mixing (has lungs and skin to respire so its okay)
How many chambers and circulation do birds and mammals have? Advantages/Limits -4 chambered -complete double circulation Advantage: maximizes blood pressure + warm blood Limitation: high energy required

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
