| conservation | protection of natural resources |
| consumer | an organism that eats other organisms |
| decomposer | consumer that breaks down the tissues of dead organisms |
| density | concentration of matter in an object |
| ecosystem | a community and its environment |
| energy | the ability to cause changes in matter |
| energy pyramid | shows amount of energy that can pass from one level of a food chain to the next |
| energy transfer | a change of energy from one form to another; for example, mechanical to electrical, solar to electrical |
| environment | everything that affects an organism, including plants, animals, soil, weather, landforms, and air |
| experiment | a procedure that is conducted under controlled conditions |
| food chain | the ways in which organisms in an ecosystem interact according to what they eat |
| food web | shows the interactions among food chains in an ecosystem |
| force | a push or pull that causes an object to move, stop, or change direction |
| friction | a force that acts against motion when surfaces rub against each other |
| gravitation | the force that pulls all objects to one another |
| gravity | the observed effect of gravitation |
| habitat | a place in an ecosystem where an organism normally lives |
