Unit 8 (stingray) Vocabulary- Quiz # 1

TermDefinition
Velocity the speed & direction of an object’s motion
Motion movement of objects, people, or animals in many different directions
Speed the distance an object moves during a certain amount of time (miles per second; mph) Average speed = Distance divided by time
Distance how far an object moves
Force a push or pull that acts on an object
Push moving an object forward by exerting a force from behind.
Pull moving an object forward by exerting a force from in front of the object.
Gravity a force that pulls everything toward the center of the Earth
Inertia the force that keeps objects moving in a straight line; resists a change in motion
Friction the force that slows down objects by rubbing against them
Acceleration the rate when velocity changes over time
Poles ends of magnets and the North Pole and South Pole- Positive & Negative poles- opposites attract (a + and – or North & South); like poles repel (push away- South & South, North & North, 2 + or 2-)
Magnetism a force that attracts certain metals and other magnets without touching; push or pulls on other objects
Balanced Forces When 2 objects exert an equal and opposite force on each other. There is no movement!
Unbalanced Forces When 1 object exerts more force on another object and movement occurs. Forces may be in the same direction or opposite directions, but there is movement. There is a Net Force.
Lift a force that pushes an object upward, against gravity.
Drag a force that pushes an object backwards, against the force of thrust.
Thrust a force that pushes an object forward, against the force of drag.
Electricity the flow of electrons (e-)
Net Force all the forces acting on an object.
