Ch 26 Cosmology Pt 1
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cosmology | study of the structure and evolution of the entire universe (cosmos) |
| Sloan Great Wall | cosmic structure formed by a giant "filament" of galaxies |
| Pencil-Beam Survey | narrow field survey of galaxy distribution |
| Galactic Pole | passes through the observer and is perpendicular to the galactic equator |
| Homogeneity | assumes that the number of galaxies in the universe is generally the same everywhere |
| Isotropy | says that the universe looks the same in every direction |
| Cosmological Principal | assumes the universe is homogenous and isotropic on sufficiently large scales |
| Cosmic Web | A network of filaments of dark matter, believed by many astronomers to form the basis of the universe |
| Hubble Ultra Deep Field | image of a small region of space, containing an estimated 10,000 galaxies |
| Olbers' Paradox | suggests that if the universe were homogeneous, infinite, and unchanging, the sky would be as bright as the Sun all the time |
| Hubble Expansion | Hubble's Law is the same, regardless of where the measurements are taken from |
| Primordial Fireball | when the early universe was hot & dense and was dominated by the effects of radiation |
| Big Bang | event considered the beginning of the universe, when all matter & radiation came into being |
| Doppler Redshift | redshift that is due to the relative motion of objects |
| Cosmological Redshift | redshift of an object that is due only to the Hubble flow of the universe |
| General Relativity | proposed by Einstein to incorporate gravity into the theory of special relativity |
| Newtonian Mechanics | basic laws of motion, which sufficiently explain much of the universe's behavior |
