Living things

TermDefinition
The variety of life. • All living things are divided into two main groups. Plants & Animals.
Diversity of Animals • The animal kingdom is divided into groups called classes. Reptiles, Birds, Mammals • These all have similar features which distinguish them from other classes.
Metabolism Metabolism is the sum of all the chemical reactions that occur in living organisms
These chemical reactions are responsible for: • Growth • Repair • Responsiveness • Reproduction • Excretion
Anabolic Reactions • These reactions use energy to join small molecules together & form large molecules. • E.g: Photosynthesis
Catabolic Reactions • Use energy to break apart large molecules into smaller molecules. • E.g. Respiration
Continuity of Life Continuity of Life is the ability of an organism to exist from one generation to the next
The characteristics of living things • In order for an organism to be considered a living thing it must have the following characteristics… 1. Biological Organisation 2. Nutrition 3. Excretion 4. Response 5. Reproduction
Biological Organisation Cell ➡ Tissue ➡Organ➡ Organ system➡ Organism
Nutrition •The Sun is the basic source of energy for all nutrition. • Plants use the sunlight to make food. This is a process known as Photosynthesis • Energy is passed through the food chain & used up in the process of cellular respiration.
Types of nutrition Autotrophic and Heterotrophic
Autotrophic • An organism that makes their own food. E.g. Plants, Algae & Bacteria
Heterotrophic • Obtains food from other living organism. E.g. carnivores, herbivores etc
Excretion • Waste products in the body must be excreted before they build up & become toxic. •Removal of waste products of metabolism from the body. •Bacteria remove waste in a process known as diffusion.
Diffusion Is the movement of particles from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
Response • Living things have tobrespond in order to react to changes (stimuli) in their environment. •The way organisms react to their environment
Reproduction: sexual • Occurs in most animals and plants • Produce offspring from two parents. • Produces variation within species
Reproduction Asexual • Produces identical offspring from one parent. • No variation • Bacteria & single celled organisms (Protista) use this method.
Life Describes an organic based object that possesses the characteristics of metabolism & continuity of life.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
