stimulus A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react.
response An action or change in behavior that occurs in reaction to a stimulus.
development The process of change that occurs during an organism's life to produce a more complex organism.
spontaneous generation The mistaken idea that living things arise from nonliving sources.
Autotroph. An organism that makes its own food.
Heterotroph. An organism that cannot make its own food.
Homeostasis. The maintenance of stable internal conditions in an organism.
What is a controlled experiment? An experiment in which two tests are identical except for one factor.
Why are plants called autotrophs? Because they make their own food.
What is homeostasis? The maintenance of stable internal conditions.
List six characteristics of living things. Cellular organization, similar chemicals, energy use, response to surroundings, growth and development, and reproduction.
What four things do all organisms need to survive? A source of energy (food), water, living space, and stable internal conditions.
