8th Grade Earth Science Chapter 25: Space Exploration Coach Leach

TermDefinition
refracting telescope A telescope that uses only lenses and refraction to gather light.
reflecting telescope A telescope that uses mirrors and reflection to gather light.
radio telescope A telescope that detects objects in space that emit radio waves.
rocket An artificial object powered by a reaction engine that produces and expels hot gases to create the reaction force needed to propel the object.
satellite A small natural or artificial object that orbits a larger astronomical body and natural ones are called moons.
probe An unmanned space vehicle that follows a one way path from Earth for the purpose of exploring space or another celestial object.
lander A space probe designed to land softly on an astronomical body; transmitting photographs and environmental data from the body's surface back to Earth.
rover A type of space probe that is a mobile, robotic vehicle delivered by a lander and is designed to explore a planets surface by remote control from Earth.
space station A manned Earth satellite designed to be a permanent human habitat and laboratory in space.
International Space Station Currently the only permanently manned space station run by five space agencies; providing a facility for scientific research in the microgravity environment of space.
space shuttle A space vehicle used to carry large satellites and probes into orbit and do maintenance on them.
