Science EOG vocab
All of the vocabulary we have done in 8th Grade Science.

Molecule | The smallest particle in a chemical element or compound that has the chemical properties of that element. |
Element | The simplest form of a pure substance. |
Compound | Pure substances that are the unions of two or more element. Can be chemically broken down. |
Mixture | Two or more substances that can be physically separated. |
Homogenous mixture | Same throughout. |
Heterogenous mixture | Not same throughout. |
Proton | Positive charge, equal to electrons/atomic number. |
Neutron | Netural charge. |
Electron | Negative charge, equal to protons/atomic number. |
Solution | A homogenous, molecular mixture of two or more substances. |
Ductile | Metal capable of being drawn out in strands . |
Valance electrons | The outer shell of an atom. |
Precipitate | Solid made from a liquid during a chemical reaction. |
Catalyst | Something that speeds up a chemical reaction. |
Exothermic | Releases heat energy. |
Endothermic | Absorbs heat energy. |
Biomass | Material from living things used as an energy source. |
Photovoltaic | Uses electricity to make solar energy. |
Sedimentary rock | Formed through the deposition and solidification of material. |
Metamorphic rock | Made from high heat and high pressure. |
Igneous rock | Made from cooling and solidification of magma or lava. |
Petrified fossils | Fossil made of minerals. |
Carbon fossils | The remains of organisms converted into a carbon residue. |
Isotope | Atoms of the same element with the same amount of protons but different neutrons. |
Radiometric dating | Using the rate of decay of unstable isotopes to find absolute age of rocks or fossils. |
Half-life | How long it takes for the radioactivity of a certain isotope to fall to half its original value. |
Carbon-14 | Basis for radiocarbon dating. |
Index fossil | Fossils used to define the geologic time scale |
Homologous structure | Body parts of different organisms with the same structure but not the same function |
Analogues structure | Body parts of different organisms with same functions but not the same structure. |
Vestigial structure | Body parts that are unnecessary in an organism. |
Taxonomy | Branch of science responsible for naming/catagorizing different species |
Niche | An organisms job in an ecosystem. |
Phenotype | Physical makeup of an organism |
Nitrification | Nitrogen->nitrates |
Ammonification | Dead animals nitrogen turned into ammonia (next is nitrification). |
Permability | Able to pass through |
Brackish water | Saltwater and freshwater mix. |
Necton | Animals able to move wo/ water currents |
Benthos | The flora and Fauna found at the bottom of a water source |
Upwelling | Cold water from the bottom comes up to the top |
Carbonic acid | H2Co3 |
