Unit 6 & 7

UNITS 6 & 7 VOCAB DEFINITIONS #2

TermDefinition
Electromagnets magnets that carry an electrical current; can be made stronger & turned on & off.
Hazard something that is dangerous and may result in being harmful.
Cause an action, reason, or event that takes places.
Effect the result or consequences of the action (cause).
Parallel / Complex circuit a circuit that has more than one branch or pathway for electrons to flow through and more than one resistor- light bulb, buzzer, bell, fan, etc. If one goes out the others stay on. This is what homes, buildings, businesses have.
Ohm a unit that measure resistance to electrical current.
Volt a measure of the electrical force provided by an energy source.
Circuit a loop/pathway for the electric charges to flow.
Series circuit a circuit that has more than one resistor on the same wire- 1 pathway.
Current the flow of electrical charges (electrons) through a material.
Conductor a material that an electrical charge can move easily through- metals- gold, silver, nails, aluminum, iron, bronze, mercury(liquid), copper.
Insulator a material that is a resistor and stops most electrical currents- paper, plastic, rubber, glass, quartz, dry wood, air, ceramics.
Resistor a material that does not let all the electrical charge flow and changes some of the electrical energy to thermal energy; limits the amount of current flowing through. Represented by a zig-zag line on the circuit. Made of glass, wire, film
Electricity the flow of electrons (e-) through a material.
Circuit diagram a map of a circuit.
Simple Circuit a circuit that has only one pathway for electricity to flow through & 1 resistor.
Overloaded Circuit a circuit that has too many resistors working at one time.
Advantage/ beneficial something that is good or helpful.
Disadvantage/ Drawback something that is bad or not helpful.
Proton positively-charged subatomic particle in the nucleus of the atom.
Neutron neutral/ no charge subatomic particle in the nucleus of the atom.
Electron negatively-charged subatomic particle outside the nucleus in shells, orbitals, or cloud.
Superconductors materials that have no resistance to electrical charges; let all electrons flow through and operate at very cold temperatures.
Filament the thin wire inside a light bulb that is part of the circuit; conducts heat & electric current.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
