Ch 24 Galaxies Pt 3
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Normal Galaxy | galaxy whose overall energy emission is consistent with the summed light of many stars |
| Active Galaxies | energetic galaxies that emit mostly long-wavelength, non-thermal radiation |
| Nonstellar Radiation | from the accretion of matter by a supermassive black hole at a galaxy's center |
| Luminous Galaxy | emits more energy in the infrared than at all other wavelengths combined |
| Starburst Galaxy | galaxy where a violent event has caused an intense episode of star formation recently |
| Seyfert Galaxy | active galaxy whose emission comes from a very small region within its nucleus |
| Radio Galaxy | active galaxy that emits most of its energy in the form of long-wavelength radiation |
| Blazar | intense AGN in which the observer's line of sight lies directly along the axis of a high-speed jet |
| Quasar | starlike radio source with a redshift that indicates an extremely large distance from Earth |
| Core-Dominated Galaxy | galaxy whose energy jets are seen head on as opposed to from the side |
| Radio-Lobe | roundish extended region of radio-emitting gas, lying beyond the center of a radio galaxy |
| Jets | bipolar beams of matter ejected from some astronomical objects like supermassive black holes |
| Look-Back Time | time in the past when an object emitted the radiation we see today |
| Active Galactic Nucleus | region of intense nonstellar emission at the center of an active galaxy |
| Supermassive Black Hole | a mass millions or billions greater than that of the Sun in a galaxy's center |
| Dusty Donut | clumpy gas and dust torus surrounding an active galactic nucleus |
| Synchrotron Radiation | nonthermal radiation produced by charged particles as they are accelerated in a strong magnetic field |
