Ethics key terms

TermDefinition
Ethics Refers to the standards of right and wrong that influence human behavior, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues
Morality Refers to private, personal standards of what is right and wrong in conduct, character, and attitude
Values Personal beliefs about what is true or right
Beliefs Interpretation or conclusion that one accepts as true
Integrity Acting in accordance with an appropriate code of ethics and accepted standards of practice
Fidelity A person’s responsibility to be loyal and truthful in their relationships with others
Autonomy An individuals right to self determination
Nonmaleficence Do no harm
Beneficence Act/ acting for the benefit of others
Justice Treating all patients fairly and in accordance with honors, standards, and law
Utility (utilitarianism) Ensures the most good is provided to the greatest number of people while causing harm to the least amount of people
Veracity Telling the truth
