TermDefinition
cardinal directions The directions of north, east, south, and west.
evidence Information that explains or supports a claim.
observe To watch and listen to something carefully.
pattern Something that is repeated over and over.
rotation The act of turning around on a fixed point.
scientific inquiry process A process that scientists use to explore observations and answer questions.
scientist A person who asks questions, makes observations, and investigates ideas to acquire knowledge and/or solve problems.
shadow The dark area formed when an object blocks rays of light.
Sun The star at the center of our solar system.
absolute magnitude A measurement of how bright stars would appear if all stars were the same distance from Earth; also known as luminosity.
apparent magnitude A measurement of how bright a star appears from Earth.
orbit (noun) The curved path of an object around a star, planet, or moon.
orbit To move around a larger object in space.
star A huge sphere of very hot, glowing gas that produces its own light.
solar system The system of planets, including Earth, moons, and other bodies that orbit the Sun.
constellation A group of stars that appears to form an image and has been given a name.
gravity A force that pulls two objects toward one another.
model A copy of an object that can be smaller or larger than the original.
moon A large, natural body that orbits a planet.
