| Microorganisms | An organism that can be seen only through a microscope. |
| Bacteria | A large group of unicellular microorganism. |
| Fungi | Spore-producing organisms that feed on organic matter. |
| Virus | A microscopic infectious particle that can only multiply inside the cells of living organisms. |
| Immune system | The body's natural defense system against 'foreign' invaders. |
| Vaccine | A substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or more diseases. |
| Pathogen | A disease causing organism. |
| Antibiotic | A substance produced by an organism that kills bacteria. |
| Binary fission | A type of asexual reproduction mechanism to make more bacteria. |
| Exponential phase | Phase of rapid growth in bacteria when all nutritional needs are met. |
| Hyphae | Thread-like structures that extend through whatever a fungus feeds on. |
| Antibiotic resistance | Bacteria evolve in a way that reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics. |
| Immune cells | Cells that circulate in the blood that help fight off or prevent disease. |
| Awheto | A type of fungus prized by tupuna for ta moko. |
| Spike proteins | Proteins found on the outside of viruses that bind to the host cell before infection. |
| Spores | Carried by the wind, if these land in a favourable place, they may grow to become fungi. |
| Cocci | Spherical bacteria. |
| Agar plate | A medium used to grow bacteria and fungi in the lab. |
| Bacilli | Rod-shaped bacteria. |
| Colony | A group of bacteria growing on a Petric dish. |
