What is the life cycle of a pathogen? Infect a host, reproduce themselves, spread from the host & infect other organisms
What is a pathogen? an organism that causes a disease
What type of cells are bacteria? single-celled & prokaryotic (no nucleus)
What does 'prokaryotic' mean? cells that do not have a nucleus
How is the life cycle of a virus different to that of a pathogen? A virus does not divide & reproduce itself, it replicates
What is gonorrhoea? a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium
What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea? a burning pain when urinating and often forms a thick yellow or green discharge from an infected person's penis or vagina
How do you prevent gonorrhoea? use barrier-type contraception e.g. condom
How to you treat gonorrhoea? antibiotics
What is salmonella? a bacteria that causes food poisoning
e the symptoms of salmonella? abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea
How is salmonella transmitted? unhygienic kitchens, undercooked food or food that has not been reheated properly
How do you prevent samonella? prepare food in hygienic conditions, cook food properly & poultry are vaccinated in the UK
What is HIV/Aids? a virus transmitted through bodily fluids or shared needles
What are the symptoms of HIV/Aids? starts with mild flu-like symptoms and then attacks the immune system
How is HIV/Aids transmitted? through bodily fluids (unprotected sex) & through cuts & using drugs with shared needles
How do you prevent HIV/Aids? barrier-type contraception (condoms) & don't use shared needles
What is measles? a virus spread through the air
What are the symptoms of measles? fever and skin rash
How is measles transmitted? through the air in tiny droplets after an infected person sneezes
How do you prevent measles? vaccine
What is Athletes Foot? a fungus (rash found between the toes)
What are the symptoms of Athletes Foot? dry, red & flaky skin or white, wet & cracked skin
How is Athletes Foot transmitted? by touching infected skin or surfaces that have been contaminated
How do you treat Athletes Foot? antifungal medication
What did Ignaz Semmelweis discover in the 1840s? handwashing could drastically reduce the number of women dying after childbirth
What is Rose Black Spot? a fungus which infects roses
What are the symptoms of Rose Black Spot? black or purple spots on leaves which reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesise
How is Rose Black Spot transmitted? in the air or water or direct contact by gardeners
How do you treat Rose Black Spot? fungicides & removing infected leaves
