What do 'spongy mesophyll' cells in leaves do? allow gases to circulate for gas exchange between the leaf & the environment
What do 'guard' cells in leaves do? open and close to control the exchange of gases (carbon dioxide, water vapour & oxygen)
What do the 'sieve tubes' in phloem cells in plants do? transport products of photosynthesis from the leaf to where they are needed
What do the 'companion cells' in phloem cells in plants do? provide the energy required for transporting substances in sieve tubes
What do the 'xylem cells' in plants do? long hollow tubes that transport water from the roots to the plant
What do 'meristem' cells in plants do? produce new cells as they divide
What do the cells of the 'circulatory system' in animals do? transport substances, defend the body & regulate temperature
What do the cells of the 'excretory system' in animals do? Remove waste products and unwanted substances, regulate the water content of the body
What do the cells of the 'muscular system' in animals do? bring about movement
What do the cells of the 'nervous system' in animals do? Respond to internal and external stimuli and conditions, carry messages for the body
What do the cells of the 'respiratory system' in animals do? deliver oxygen for respiration and remove waste
What do the cells of the 'reproductive system' in animals do? Bring about fertilisation to produce new offspring
What do the cells of the 'skeletal system' in animals do? To bring about movement, support and protect internal structures, produce blood cells, store and release calcium
What do chromosomes do? carry genetic information in DNA
What does mitosis (a type of cell division) make sure of? when a cell divides each new cell produced has the same genetic information
Where do you find DNA? in chromosomes in a cell's nucleus
What is a 'gene'? a section of a chromosome that contains the code for the production of a particular protein
