8ES Chp 19:Weather

8th Grade Earth Science Chapter 19: Weather Coach Leach

TermDefinition
Weather The condition of the atmosphere at a given time and place.
Meteorology The scientific study of the atmosphere, including its composition, structure, weather, and alteration.
Atmospheric Pressure The weight of atmospheric gases.
Wind Moving air traveling from regions of high pressure to those of low pressure.
Wind Chill Factor The perceived lowering air temperature as a wind blows over unprotected skin and applies only to people and warm blooded animals.
Precipitation Any form of water that falls to the earth's surface from the sky.
Humidity A measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.
Relative Humidity The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum that could be vaporized at the current temperature.
Pressure Gradient The rate of change of atmospheric pressure with horizontal distance.
Cyclone The low pressure weather system toward which surrounding winds spiral counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
Anticyclone The high pressure weather system from which winds spiral outward in a clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere or counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
Trade Wind A global wind of the low latitudes that flows from the subtropical high toward low pressure centers at the Equator.
Prevailing Westerly A global wind of the mid latitudes that flows from the subtropical high toward the sub polar low while the Coriolis effect turns the winds so that they consistently flow from the southwest to northeast in the Northern Hemisphere.
Polar Easterly A global wind flowing out of the high pressure zones over the poles toward the sub polar lows while the Coriolis effect turns these winds so that they flow mostly from the east.
Dew Point The temperature at which the relative humidity of an air mass is 100%.
Cloud A mass of extremely tiny liquid water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere.
Condensation Nucleus A microscopic particle that is suspended in the air and on which water easily condenses to form droplets.
Freezing Nucleus A microscopic particle suspended in the air on which water easily deposits to form ice crystals.
Fog Stratus clouds at ground level.
Coalescence The process by which droplets join together and grow to form raindrops or hail.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
