Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conservation of Angular Momentum | ensures that a spinning gas cloud must spin faster as it contracts |
| Centripetal Force | force directed toward the center of a body's orbit |
| Kepler | astronomer who first stated laws of planetary motion |
| Keplerian Motion | says that the orbital velocity of an object should decrease the further away it is |
| Rotation Curve | plot of the orbital speed of disk material in a galaxy vs. its distance from the center |
| Dark Halo | region of a galaxy beyond the visible halo where dark matter is believed to reside |
| Dark Matter | mass in galaxies whose existence we infer from rotation curves and other techniques |
| Rubin | influential astronomer in the study of galactic rotation curves and the presence of dark matter |
| Stellar-Mass Black Hole | formed by the gravitational collapse of a massive star |
| Supermassive Black Hole | a mass millions or billions greater than that of the Sun in many galaxies' centers |
| Gravitational Lensing | effect induced on the image of a distant object by a massive foreground object |
| Sagittarius A Star | the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy |
| Accretion Disk | flat disk of matter spiraling down onto the surface of a neutron star or black hole |
| Solar Mass | the mass of the Sun used as a unit of mass |
| Galactic Nucleus | small, central, high-density region of a galaxy |
