Unit 9- Life Science

TermDefinition
Organelle Tiny structure that performs a specific function.
Cell membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell. Protective layer that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier.
Nucleus Membrane bound organelle, contains DNA.
Cytoplasm Fluid in a cell that the organelles float in.
Asexual Reproduction Process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent.
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
Cell The basic unit of structure and function in living things.
Cell Theory Idea that all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells.
Domain A taxonomic category above the kingdom level. The three domains are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya.
Eukaryotic Cell Cell with a nucleus ( surrounded by its own membrane) and other internal organelles.
Heterotrophic Organisms that obtain their nutrients or food from consuming other organisms.
Kingdom Second largest taxonomic group; there are six- animalia, plantae, prostista, eubacteria, archaebacteria, fungi
Multicellular Organism made up of more than one cell.
Prokaryotic Cells Cells that do not have a nucleus.
Sexual Reproduction Having two parents. Offspring are different than the parents.
Taxomony The system of describing the ways in which organisms are grouped or classified according to similarities or differences.
Unicellular A single celled organism. Made up of only one cell.
