Ecological Relations

Terms to Know

TermDefinition
Competition The struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources
Symbiosis A close relationship between two species in which at least one benefits
Mutualism A symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit
Parasitism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed
Commensalism A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected
Predation An interaction in which one organism kills and eats another
Predator The organism that does the killing
Adaptation A characteristic that allows an organism to survive in its environment, such as camouflage, sharp teeth, or running fast
Niche Way in which an organism lives and uses the conditions it lives in
Overpopulation Condition that occurs when a population becomes so large that it causes damage to the environment
Prey The organism that is killed
