Iron Def. anemia

classifications of anemia? Normolytic-normal RBC size and shape, microlytic anemia-small RBC and low levels of HgB in each RBC, Macrolytic anemia-large WBC and Sickle Cell anemia-defective hgb.
What is Iron Def. Anemia? Lack of Iron in Blood, Very common type of anemia common cause is wt. loss and inadequate diet, GI bleed, excessive mentral period.
Signs & Symptoms of of Iron Def. Anemia fatigue, feeling cold all of the time, HA, weakness, rapid heart beat at rest, pallor color to skin, fingernails can become brittle and thin spoon shaped or concave, tongue beffy red sore
Treatment of Iron Def Anemia determin the cause of the anemia and treat that, give oral iron supllements, eat green leafy veggies, cereal, legunes, raisins
Do not be alarm if you see black or green stool or become constipated
How do you give liquid iron supple and why? with a straw to prvent teeth from staining because Iron will stain teeth.
How do you give Iron suppl. injections? Iron dextran (imferon) IM using the Z-track technique, Md will give 1st dose because of high risk for allergic reactions.
What do you avoid if taking Iron suppl? Milk or antacid, they are not good for absoption of the supplement so give the iron with fruit juice.
what PO meds do you give for iron def. anemia give ferrous sulfate(Feosol)or ferrous gluconate PO meds
