| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Fresh concrete | Defined as concrete at the state when its components are fully mixed but its strength has not yet developed |
| Normal concrete | Cement, water, sand, aggregates |
| Fiber reinforced concrete | Those in normal concrete plus fibers (e.g. steel, PVA, PP, glass fiber) |
| Foam concrete | Those in normal concrete without aggregates and plus foaming agent |
| Shrinkage compensating concrete | Those in normal concrete plus expansive agent and/or shrinkage reducing agent |
| Transition zone | The region between large aggregate particles and the harden cement paste (10-50 micron meter) |
| Workability | The amount of mechanical work required for full compaction of the concrete without segregation |
| Segregation | The separation of the components of fresh concrete, resulting in non-uniform mix |
| Bleeding | The concentration of water at certain portions of the concrete. The locations with increased water concentration are concrete surface, bottom of large aggregate and bottom of reinforcing steel. |
| Ultra lightweight concrete | < 1200 kg/m3 |
| Lightweight concrete | 1200 -1800 kg/m3 |
| Normal-weight concrete | 2400 kg/m3 |
| Heavy weight concrete | > 3200 kg/m3 |
| Low-strength concrete | < 20 MPa |
| Moderate-strength concrete | 20-60 MPa |
| High-strength concrete | 60-130 MPa |
| Ultra high-strength concrete | 130-200 MPa |
| Admixture | is defined as a material other than water, aggregates, cement and reinforcing fibers that is used in concrete as an ingredient and added to the batch immediately before or during mixing. |
| Air-entraining agents | is used to improve the frost resistance of concrete (i.e., resistance to stresses arising from the freezing of water in concrete). |
| Water-reducing admixture | a surface-active chemical to reduce the required amount of water to attain a given workability. |
| Retarding admixtures | are chemicals that can slow down the dissolution of ions from the cement, thus extending the induction period and delaying initial set |
| Silica fume | is a by-product of the induction arc furnaces in the silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy industries |
| Fly ash | is a by-product of electricity generating plant using coal as fuel |
| Strength | is defined as the ability of a material to resist stress without failure |
