Waves

Waves - Science

Frequency The number of waves produced in a given amount of time (expressed in hertz)
Wavelength The distance between any two adjacent crests or compressions in a series of waves or troughs and rarefractions
Trough Lowest point of a transverse wave
Crest Highest point of a transverse wave
Amplitude Maximum position the wave vibrates from its rest position. Height of the wave
Wave speed The speed at which a wave travels (distance traveled over time). This depends greatly on the medium
Longitudinal Wave Particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that the wave travels
Mechanical Wave A wave that requires a medium
Transverse Wave Transverse particles vibrate with an up and down motion
Surface Wave Combination of transverse and longitudinal waves between two mediums
Electromagnetic Wave Waves that do not require a medium but can travel through one
Reflection Occurs when a wave bounces back after striking a barrier
Refraction The bending of a wave as it passes at an angle from one medium to another
Diffraction The bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening
Constructive Crests of one wave overlaps the crest of another wave. Increase amplitude
Deconstructive Crests of one wave overlaps the trough of another. Decrease amplitude

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
