Study Landforms
study guide for landforms
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| A landform | A shape or feature of the earth's surface |
| A Drainage Basin | A system of rivers and streams that drains an area |
| Erosion | The weathering (wearing away) and the transport (carrying away) of earth material |
| Deposition | The process where eroded earth materials settles out into another place. |
| Sediment | The eroded earth material that is deposited into a new place. |
| A Slope | The angle or slant of a stream channel or land surface |
| An Alluvial Fan | The delta-shaped landform found at the bottom of a steep canyon where the slope gets flatter. A delta is at the water, an ________ _____ is not. |
| Base | The bottom of a mountain |
| Peak | the highest point or summit of a mountain |
| Elevation | the verticle distance or height above sea level |
| Sea Level | The average height of the ocean's surface, 0 (zero) elevation |
| Contour Lines | a line on a topographic map that connects the points of equal elevation |
| Contour interval | The difference in elevation between contour lines |
| Topographic map | Uses contour lines to show the shape and elevation of the lands surface |
| Benchmark | A surveyor's marker usually placed permanatley in the ground at a known position and elevation |
| Intermittent stream | Water flowing in it only during certain times of the year |
| Perrenial Stream | Always has water flowing |
| Glacier | A large mass or body of moving ice |
| Ridge | A narrow area of high land between two vallies |
| Valley | A low area between hills and mountains, often where a river flows |
| What characteristics does a steeper slope have? | deeper canyon, faster waterflow, Heavy sediment settles faster, more erosion, longer delta |
| What charcteristics does a canyon with no slopes have? | Lighter sediment can carry very far, small delta, sediment went to outskirts |
| Which sediment settles faster, lighter or heavier? | Heavier sediment |
