A landform A shape or feature of the earth's surface
A Drainage Basin A system of rivers and streams that drains an area
Erosion The weathering (wearing away) and the transport (carrying away) of earth material
Deposition The process where eroded earth materials settles out into another place.
Sediment The eroded earth material that is deposited into a new place.
A Slope The angle or slant of a stream channel or land surface
An Alluvial Fan The delta-shaped landform found at the bottom of a steep canyon where the slope gets flatter. A delta is at the water, an ________ _____ is not.
Base The bottom of a mountain
Peak the highest point or summit of a mountain
Elevation the verticle distance or height above sea level
Sea Level The average height of the ocean's surface, 0 (zero) elevation
Contour Lines a line on a topographic map that connects the points of equal elevation
Contour interval The difference in elevation between contour lines
Topographic map Uses contour lines to show the shape and elevation of the lands surface
Benchmark A surveyor's marker usually placed permanatley in the ground at a known position and elevation
Intermittent stream Water flowing in it only during certain times of the year
Perrenial Stream Always has water flowing
Glacier A large mass or body of moving ice
Ridge A narrow area of high land between two vallies
Valley A low area between hills and mountains,often where a river flows
What characteristics does a steeper slope have? deeper canyon, faster waterflow, Heavy sediment settles faster, more erosion, longer delta
What charcteristics does a canyon with no slopes have? Lighter sediment can carry very far, small delta, sediment went to outskirts
Which sediment settles faster, lighter or heavier? Heavier sediment
