Cranial Nerves
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Olfactory nerve (CN I) | Carries information about sense of smell |
Optic nerve (CN II) | Carries visual information from the eyes to the brain |
Oculomotor nerve (CN III) | Responsible for eye movement, regulation of pupil size, near vision accommodation, and proprioception |
Trochlear nerve (CN IV) | Responsible for eye movements and proprioception |
Trigeminal nerve (CN V) | Responsible for head/face sensations, chewing movements, and proprioception |
Abducens (CN VI) | Responsible for abduction of the eye and proprioception |
Facial nerve (CN VII) | Responsible for facial expression, saliva and tear secretion, and taste |
Vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII) | Responsible for balance/equilibrium sense and hearing |
Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) | Responsible for tongue sensation, swallowing movement, saliva secretion, and aids in reflex control of BP and respiration |
Vagus nerve (CN X) | Responsible for sensations and movements of organs supplied. (Examples: slows heart, increases peristalsis, and contracts muscles for voice production) |
Accessory nerve (CN XI) | Responsible for voice production, movements of viscera, shoulder movements, turning of head, and proprioception |
Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) | Responsible for tongue movements and proprioception |
