TermDefinition
Monitor To make measurements and observations over time to keep track of something.
Cone of Uncertainty The visual picture of a hurricane forecast on a map.
SeismoMeter An instrument used to measure the shaking from an earthquake.
Saffir Simpson Scale A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed.
Magnitude A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Generally, the stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude.
Precursor An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur.
Storm Surge An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm.
Flood Occurs when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. (It is usually caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, or storm surge from a cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas).
FloodPlain An area of low-lying ground next to a river, formed mainly of river sediments.
Pattern Something that repeats in a predictable manner.
Severity Extent of damage, or loss from a natural hazard event.
Force A push or pull exerted on an object.
Intensity Type of damage from a natural hazard.
Prediction A forecast
Risk The chance that a danger or hazard will occur
