| Saffir Simpson Scale | A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed. |
| Magnitude | A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Generally, the stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude. |
| Precursor | An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur. |
| Storm Surge | An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm. |
| Flood | Occurs when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. (It is usually caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, or storm surge from a cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas). |
