| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Evolution | Change over time; the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms |
| Adaptation | Heritable characteristics that increase an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce in an environment |
| Descent with Modification | Passing traits from the parent to the offspring |
| Natural Selection | Process by which organisms that are most suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully; survival of the fittest |
| Fossil | Preserved remains of, or traces of, ancient organisms. |
| Fossil Record | A chronological collection of life’s remains in the rock layers recorded during the passage of time. The youngest organisms are on top and the oldest are found deeper in the earth. |
| Extinct | Term used to refer to a species that has died out and has not living members. |
| Homologous Structure | Structures that are similar in different species of common ancestors. |
| Vestigial Structure | Structure that is inherited from ancestors which has lost much or all of its original function. |
| Population | Groups of individuals of the same species that live in the same area. |
| Variation | Divergence in the structural or functional characteristics of an organism from the species or population norm or average |
| Artificial selection | Selective breeding of plants and animals to promote the occurrence of desirable traits in offspring |
| Gene Pool | All the genes, including all of the different alleles for each gene, that are present in a population at any one time. |
| Antibiotics | Group of drugs used to block the growth and reproduction of bacterial pathogens. |
| Micro-Evolution | Evolution on the smallest scale. These changes happen in alleles of a population. |
| Genetic Drift | Sum total of all the different form of genetic information carried by a particular species, or by all organisms on Earth. |
| Gene Flow | The movement of genes into or out of a population. |
| Fitness | How well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| Heritable | Capable of being inherited or of passing along inheritance. |
| Proliferation | To grow by rapid production. |
