| Cone of Uncertainty | The visual picture of a hurricane forecast on a map. |
| Storm Surge | An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm. |
| Severity | Extent of damage, or loss from a natural hazard event. |
| Mitigate | to make milder or softer, to moderate in force or intensity |
| Precursor | An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur. |
| Monitoring | the act of observing something (and sometimes keeping a record of it) |
| Seismometer | Instrument used to measure horizontal or vertical motion during an earthquake. |
| Fault | A break in the earth's crust |
| Magnitude | A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Generally, the stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude. |
| Radar/Doplar | system that uses reflected radio waves to detect objects and measure their distance and speed |
| Levees | Barriers composed of sediments made on either side of a river due to flooding. |
| Seismic Resistance Construction | structures that are designed to protect buildings from hazards such as earthquakes. |
| Mercalli Scale | A scale that rates earthquakes according to their intensity and how much damage they cause at a particular place |
| Enhanced Fujita Scale | classifies the intensity of a tornado, based on wind speeds and specifically on the types of damage that occur |
| Volcanic Explosive index | a scale for reporting the size of an explosive volcanic eruption |
