| Orbit | The path an object follows as it moves around other objects. |
| Revolution | The motion of an object around another object. |
| Rotation | A spinning motion. |
| Rotation axis | The line on which an objects rotates. |
| Solstice | A day when Earth's rotation axis is most toward or away from the Sun. |
| Equinox | A day when Earth's rotation axis is neither toward or away from the Sun, and is leaning along its own orbit. |
| Maria | Large, dark, flat areas on the moon. |
| Phase | The portion of the moon or a planet as seen from Earth. |
| Waxing phase | More of the moon's near side is lit. |
| Waning phase | Less of the moon's near side is lit. |
| Umbra | Central, darker area of a shadow where light is completely blocked. |
| Penumbra | Lighter part of a shadow where light is partially blocked. |
| Solar eclipse | When the moon's shadow appears on the Earth's surface. |
| Lunar eclipse | When the moon moves into the Earth's shadow. |
| Tide | The daily rise and fall of the sea level. |
