Cone of Uncertainty The visual pictureof a hurricane forecast on map.
Saffir-Simpson Scale A system for classifing the intensity of a hurricane base on its wind speed.
Mitigate A 12-point scale for expressing the local intensity of an earthquake.
Convergent Boundary a location in Earth’s crust and mantle where two tectonic plates crash into one another, either one going under the other, or colliding into one another
Transform Boundary a location in Earth’s crust and mantle where two tectonic plates slide past one another
Divergent Boundary a location in Earth’s crust and mantle where two tectonic plates move apart from one another
Precursor An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur.
Monitor To make measurements and observations over time to keep track of something.
Seismometer An insrument used to measure the shaking from an earthquake.
Enhanced Fujita Scale Used to assign a tornado a 'rating' based on estimated wind speeds and related damage.
Mercalli Scale Based on observable earthquake damage.
Storm Surge An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm.
Natural Hazard Forecast A scientific claim about the likelihood of a natural hazard event occuring in a particular place.
Forecast A scientific claim (statement backed by evidence and scientific reasoning) about the likelihood that an event will occur in the future.
Risk The chance that danger might occur
