| Magnitude | A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude. |
| Saffir-Simpson Scale | A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed. |
| Cone of Uncertainty | The visual picture of a hurricane forecast on a map. |
| Forecast | A scientific claim (statement backed by evidence and scientific reasoning) about the likelihood that an event will occur in the future. |
| Natural Hazard Forecast | A scientific claim about the likelihood of a natural hazard event occurring in a particular place. |
| Storm surge | An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm. |
| Fault | A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. |
| Tectonic Plate | A massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. |
| Mitigate | Steps taken to avoid or minimize negative environmental impacts. |
| Natural Disaster | Extreme, sudden events caused by environmental factors such as storms, floods, droughts, fires, and heatwaves. |
