| flood | occurs when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. (It is usually caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snow melt, or storm surge from a cyclone or tsunami in the coastal areas.) |

| floodplain | an era of low-lying ground next to a river, formed mainly of river sediments. |
| storm surge | an abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm |

| saffir-Simpson scale | a system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed. |
