TermDefinition
Tornado a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system.
Hurricane a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Flood an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
Earthquake a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.
Volcanic Euruption when gas and/or lava are released from a volcano—sometimes explosively
Cone of uncertainity a graphic depiction of the increasing accuracy that is possible for estimates as the details of a project become more known over time
Natural Disaster a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life.
Forecast predict or estimate (a future event or trend).
Risk a situation involving exposure to danger.
Natural Hazard Forecast provide information on the physical event characteristics, such as the location, timing, and magnitude of a potentially damaging event
Storm Surge a rising of the sea as a result of atmospheric pressure changes and wind associated with a storm.
Monitoring observe and check the progress or quality of (something) over a period of time; keep under systematic review.
Seismometer the internal part of the seismograph, which may be a pendulum or a mass mounted on a spring
Precursor a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner.
Fault a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock
