| Term | Definition |

| Tornado | a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. |
| Hurricane | a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. |
| Flood | an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land. |
| Earthquake | a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. |
| Volcanic Euruption | when gas and/or lava are released from a volcano—sometimes explosively |
| Cone of uncertainity | a graphic depiction of the increasing accuracy that is possible for estimates as the details of a project become more known over time |
| Natural Disaster | a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life. |
| Forecast | predict or estimate (a future event or trend). |
| Risk | a situation involving exposure to danger. |
| Natural Hazard Forecast | provide information on the physical event characteristics, such as the location, timing, and magnitude of a potentially damaging event |
| Storm Surge | a rising of the sea as a result of atmospheric pressure changes and wind associated with a storm. |
| Monitoring | observe and check the progress or quality of (something) over a period of time; keep under systematic review. |
| Seismometer | the internal part of the seismograph, which may be a pendulum or a mass mounted on a spring |
| Precursor | a person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner. |
| Fault | a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock |
