| Storm Surge | An abnormal rise of water generated by a storm. |
| Saffir-Simpson Scale | A wind scale with a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. |
| Risk | The possibility of something bad happening. |
| Mitigate | To make less severe, serious, or painful. |
| Magnitude | The great size or extent of something. |
| Fault | A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. |
| Seismometer | The internal part of the seismograph, which may be a pendulum or a mass mounted on a spring. |
| Monitoring | A process to periodically collect, analyse and use information to actively manage performance. |
| Precursor | A person or thing that comes before another of the same kind; a forerunner. |
| Tectonic Plate | A massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. |

| Convergent Boundary | This occurs when plates move towards each other and collide; converge. |
| Divergent Boundary | This occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other; diverge. |
| Transform boundary | This occurs when plates slide sideways past each other; sideways. |
