| Term | Definition |

| Community | A group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other |
| Consumer | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Producer | An organism that makes its own food |
| Decomposer | An organism that gets energy by breaking down biotic waste and dead organisms, and turns raw materials to the soil and water |
| Carnivore | A consumer that eats only animals |
| Herbivore | A consumer that eats only plants |
| Omnivore | An organism that eats both plants and animals |
| Parasitism | A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed |
| Commensalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected |
| Mutualism | A relationship in which both species benefits |
| Predator | An animal that obtains food mostly by killing and eating other animals |
| Prey | Animals that are killed and eaten by other animals |
| Symbiosis | Any close relationship between species |
| Niche | Refers to how an organism survives, how it finds food and avoids danger |
| Food Web | Shows how organisms in a particular ecosystem depend on each other for food |
| Food Chain | Simple model of the feeding relationship in an ecosystem |
| Carring capacity | Largest number of individuals of one species that an ecosystem can support |
| Limiting Factor | Anything that restricts the number of individuals in a population |
| Biome | Large geographic areas that have similar climates and ecosystems |
| Natural Selection | Organisms with traits best suited for their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce |
