UNIT 5 #2
Unit # 5 Vocabulary definitions- Lessons # 4-6: QUIZ # 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mixture | Materials that are combined together physically; can pick out the different substances; physical change; not evenly mixed. Exam: salad, sandwiches, fruit salads, soda, laundry, pepper & water, sand & water, iron filings + water |
| Solution | A special type of mixture where one substance dissolves in another substance; particles are evenly mixed throughout, you cannot pick out the substances; can be separated. Exam: ice tea, lemonade, oceans, air/atmosphere, food coloring + water |
| Solute | The substance that dissolves in the solvent. Exam: salt or sugar |
| Solvent | The substance that does the dissolving; Water is the Universal Solvent as it is used more often to dissolve solutes. |
| Dissolves | When one substance breaks apart in another substance and you cannot see the individual substances. |
| Saturated | A solution contains all the solute that can be dissolved in the solvent; any extra solute will not dissolve. |
| Dilute | A solution is not saturated and there is more solvent than solute. |
| Concentrated | A solution that has so much solute and is close being saturated. |
| Suspension | a mixture in which small particles of a substance are dispersed throughout a gas or liquid. |
| Unsaturated | A solution that is the opposite of a saturated solution; a lot of solvent compared to solute. |
| Viscosity (viscous) | how a thick a substance is and how much it will flow |
| Alloy | A material that is a combination of two or more metals or nonmetal and a metal. |
| Durable | an object that is strong & lasts a long time |
| Element | made up of only one kind of atom; pure substances |
| Atom | The smallest particle of an element. |
| Proton | A subatomic particle with a positive (p+) charge in the nucleus. |
| Neutron | A subatomic particle with no charge (n ) in the nucleus; doesn’t affect the charge of the atom. |
| Electron | A subatomic particle with a negative (e-)charge, in electron shells/orbits around the nucleus |
| Compound | made up of more than one element that combines in a chemical reaction. |
| Periodic Table of Elements | Elements are arranged by rows (atomic #) and columns (properties they share). |
| Natural resources | Materials that are found in nature. |
| Metals | Elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity; let electrons flow easily. |
| Atomic Theory | a scientific explanation of the structure of atoms & how they interact with other atoms |
| Nonmetals | Elements that are good insulators and do not let electrons flow; do not conduct electricity |
| Noble gases | elements that do not combine with other elements because their outer electron shells are complete. |
| Molecule | Atoms that combine with other atoms. |
| Homogeneous | A mixture in which the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout. Exam: rainwater, vinegar |
| Heterogeneous | A mixture in which the components are not uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. Exam: ocean water, pizza |
