| Nucleus | Stores and protects the instructions, the DNA, for how to make the organism |
| Cell membrane | Regulates what enters and exits the cell and acts as protection for the cell |
| Cell wall | Rigid outer structure that gives the cell a distinct shape and size and protects the cell - Plant Only |
| Mitochondria | Converts the energy in nutrients into usable energy |
| Golgi apparatus | Packages and sends material to all parts of the cell or to be released outside of the cell |
| Chloroplast | Uses light energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars that the cell can use for food - Plant Only |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | Helps build and transport many of the parts that make up a cell |
| Ribosome | Builds new proteins |
| DNA | The substance that makes up the instructions for building a cell’s components and for carrying out its life functions |
| Cytoplasm | A gel-like substance that fills the inside of the cell |
| Lysosome | Breaks down waste and any unfamiliar materials in the cell - Animal Only |
| Central Vacuole | Stores material, often water, for the cell - Plant Only |
