Organisms and Environments

TermDefinition
Ecosystem all the living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) things that interact with each other in an environment
Population a group of people or animals of a particular kind that live in a place
Community populations of different kinds of organisms that live in the same place at the same time
Habitat the environment where an organism lives
Producers a living thing (such as a green plant) that makes its own food and is often a food source for other organisms
Consumers organisms that get energy by eating other organisms
Decomposers organisms that get their energy by feeding on dead materials and wastes
Interdependency related in such a way that each needs or depends on the other
Aquarium a container in which fish and other water animals and plants can live
Terrarium a container that is ued for growing plants or keeping small animals indoors
Biome a major type of community of certain kinds of plants and animals living together in a particular climate
Germinate a seed begins to grow
Tropism turning of a living organism to or away from light or heat
Photosynthesis the process by which a green plant turns water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight into food
Fertilizer a substance that is added to soil to help the growth of plants
Environment the surroundings that an organism lives in
Carnivore an animal that eats meat (other animals)
Omnivore an animal that eats both plants and meat (other animals)
Algae simple plants that have no leaves or stems that grow in water
Sun The source of all energy in a food chain
