Digestion
| Term | Definition |

| Digestion | The process by which food is broken down into smaller nutrients |
| Mechanical Digestion | Physical breakdown of food by chewing or churning |
| Chemical Digestion | Chemical breakdown of food by enzymes |
| Mouth | Carbohydrate digestion begins (Mechanical and chemical digestion) |
| Amylase | An enzyme in saliva that breaks down starch into sugar |
| Epiglottis | The flap that directs food down the esophagus |
| Esophagus | A 30cm long tube that connects the mouth to the stomach |
| Peristalsis | Rhythmic movements of the muscular walls of the digestive tract push food through it (breaks down proteins with pepsin and hydrochloride acid) |
| Stomach | A muscular organ that starts the digestion of proteins |
| Pepsin | An enzyme that breaks down protiens |
| Liver | Produces bile |
| Gallbladder | Stores bile |
| Bile | Breaks fats into tiny particles |
| Pancreas | Produces insulin to break down sugar |
| Insulin | A chemical that controls the amount of glucose in your bloodstream at any given moment |
| Small intestine | A coiled tube about 7 meters long and 2.5 cm in a diameter.Most of the food that we eat goes to this intestine |
| Villi | The lining of the small intestine covered with small finger-like protections |
| Large intestine | Used to remove access water from undigested food |
| Rectum | Stored solid waste products |
| Enzymes | Speed up the chemical reactions that break large molecules into smaller molecules (fits like a lock and a key) |
