| Digestion | process by which food is broken down into small nutrients |
| Mechanical Digestion | the physical breakdown of food by chewing or churning |
| Chemical Digestion | the chemical breakdown of food |
| Mouth | Where carbohydrates get broken down |
| Amylase | Enzymes in saliva |
| Epiglottis | flap that directs food to the right pipe |
| Esophagus | tube that connects your mouth to stomach |
| Peristalsis | The rhythmic contraction of muscles that push food through the digestion system |
| Stomach | churns food and adds gastric juices |
| Pepsin | hydrochloric acid (hci) and enzymes break down protien |
| Liver | produces bile, which breaks down fats into small pieces |
| Gallbladder | stores bile until needed |
| Bile | Stored in gallbladder until released into the small intestine |
| Pancreas | juice is made then moved to the small intestine |
| Insulin | made by the pancreas and is used to regulate sugar |
| Small intestine | most chemical digestion is done and nutrients are absorbed |
| Villi | fingerlike projections in the small intestine that help to absorb nutrients |
| Large intestine | excess water and vitamins are absorbed solid waste is formed |
| Rectum | stores solid wastes until eliminated from the body |
| Enzymes | like a puzzle and fit together perfectly |
