| Digestion | the process by which food is broken down into small nutrients |
| Mechanical Digestion | the physical breakdown of food by chewing or churning |
| Chemical Digestion | the breakdown of food by enzymes |
| Mouth | the start of carb digestion. |
| Amylase | Enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates |
| Esophagus | A tube that connects the mouth to the stomach |
| Peristalsis | the rhythmic contraction of mushes that push down food |
| Stomach | Muscular organ that starts the digestion of proteins |
| Pepsin | Enzyme that breaks down protein |
| Small intestine | Most chemical digestion is completed and nutrients are absorbed |
| Liver | Produces bile that breaks fats down |
| Gall bladder | Stores bile until released |
| Pancreas | secretes enzymes into the small intestine to digest proteins, fats, and carbs |
| Absorption | Digested nutrients can diffuse through walls of intestine and into blood |
| Villi | Fingerlike projections in the small intestine to help absorb nutrients |
| Large Intestine | Absorbs excess water and vitamins. Forms solid waste products |
| Rectum | Stores solid waste products until eliminated from the body from the anus |
| Ulcers | erosion of the surface of alimentary canal with some sort of irritant |
