Nature of science

Year 9 terminology

TermDefinition
Scientific theory A well substantiated explanation for an aspect based on a body of evidence that has repeatedly been confirmed by experimentation and observation
Experiment Is a technique used to identify the workings of some scientific idea.
Quantitive data Data that can be counted or measured in numerical values
Qualitative data Descriptive data that is not expressed numerically
Observation Is what a person is actually seeing, hearing, feeling, etc.
Inference Is an assumption about a behaviour, object, or picture, etc.
Aim Is a statement of what you are going to do in the practical
Hypothesis A statement predicting the outcome of a result
Independent variable Variable you are manipulating, you decide its values in the experiment
Dependent variable Variable that you measure the changes in the experiment
Controlled variable Variables that remain the same (fixed) in the experiment
Fair Compared repeats of an experiment or the experiment and control only differ by one variable at a time
Reliable measure of how likely the same result will be obtained in another circumstance using the same method
Hazchem symbol Internationally recognised system of identifying hazardous materials
Control experiment Another experiment in which all the variables are the same except for one (independent variable). Allows you to make comparisons and ensures the results you obtain are due to the variable you are testing and no other factors.
