Terminology

QuestionAnswer
Anacrusis An unaccented beat at the start of a phrase.
Acciaccatura or grace note An ornament that is played very quick before the main note (sounds crushed).
Reverb A guitar effect that adds an echo to the sound.
Pitch shifting An electronic effect used to bend a note or add harmony
Pizzicato or pizz Plucking a stringed instrument.
Polyphonic Musical texture where 2 or more tunes are played at the same time and woven together.
Monophonic Music with a tune and nothing else, no harmony, accompaniment, no percussion.
Mbube A type of South African Zulu a cappella singing Used in Graceland and Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes
Tone Major, Minor, Chromatic, Diatonic = notes from major and minor scale, No tone = Atonal
Antiphonal A type of texture where 2 choirs or groups of instruments are singing or playing at different times.
SATB Choir Choir with soprano and alto (female singers) tenor and bass (male singers)
Heterophonic When all the parts have different versions of the tune.
Overdubbing Recording a track over another pre-corded track.
Conjunct Where the notes move in small steps - NO LEAPS
Disjunct Where the notes move in LEAPS - no steps
