Some Terminology

QuestionAnswer
What is anthropometric data? Measurements of human body parts.
What is ergonomics? Making sure the product fits the user so it is comfortable and easy to use.
What does CAD mean? Computer Aided Design
What does CAM mean? Computer Aided Manufacturing
What does fusibility mean? A much heating a material needs to melt it. High fusibility = low melting point
What does thermosetting mean? A polymer (plastic) that is rigid, with high melting point and fire resistant.
What does MDF stand for? Medium density fibreboard
What is a composite material? A material made from two or more materials fused together. Examples include: High carbon steel, Kevlar, Glass Reinforced Plastic, GRP
What does FSC stand for? Forestry Stewardship Council
What is a tolerance? A measurement that something can differ by when cut. Eg +/- 2mm
What does PCB stand for? Printed Circuit Board
What does gauge mean? A measurement - generally of the thickness of a material.
What is a rivet? A metal peg with a head on one side. Used for joining pieces of metal.
What is injection moulding? A tube of softened plastic is inserted into a solid mould. Air is injected into the tube, forcing the plastic to expand to fit the shape.
What is a photosensitive material? One that responds to being exposed to light.
