Tides

TermDefinition
tidal force the gravitational force exerted on the earth's water by the moon and sun.
high tide a water level that is above average sea level and will occur on the side of the earth facing the moon and opposite the moon.
low tide a water level that is below average sea level and will occur on the sides of the earth that are 90 degrees from the moon.
tidal range the difference between the levels of ocean water at high tide and low tide.
spring tide when the largest daily tidal range occurs due to the sun, earth, and moon all being in a straight line.
neap tide when the smallest daily tidal range occurs due to the sun, earth, and moon all forming a 90 degree angle.
