The Three Classes of Rock

| rock | A combination of one or more minerals or organic matter is called rock. |
| composition | The makeup of minerals and organic matter the rock contains |
| texture | The size, shape, and positions of the grains that makeup a rock |
| igneous rock | forms when molten rock cools |
| intrusive igneous rock | when magma pushes into the surrounding rock below Earth’s surface and cools |
| extrusive igneous rock | forms after a volcano erupts and lava cools |
| sedimentary rock | forms when layers of sediment pressing on each other |
| metamorphic rock | forms when rocks are exposed to high heat and pressure |
| foliated metamorphic rock | forms with bands or stripes |
| nonfoliated metamorphic rock | forms without bands and made of few minerals |
